UK caravan and trailer with road legal number plate ready for European travel

Driving in Europe from the UK Checklist

Driving in Europe from the UK: Number Plate, Trailer Plate & Document Checklist

Planning a road trip to Europe with your car, van, motorhome, caravan or trailer? Before you travel, it is important to check the latest rules for number plates, UK identifiers, insurance, documents and trailer registration.

This guide explains the key things UK drivers should check before driving in Europe, including when you may need a UK sticker, when a trailer needs its own registration plate, and how to order the correct road legal plate before you travel.

If you need a compliant replacement number plate before your trip, you can browse our full range of replacement number plates at YNPS.

1. Check your UK driving licence before travelling

Before driving abroad, make sure your UK driving licence is valid and up to date. Most UK photocard licence holders can drive in many European countries without an International Driving Permit, but you should always check the rules for each country you plan to visit or travel through.

You may need an International Driving Permit if you have a paper driving licence or a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man. If you are hiring a vehicle abroad, the hire company may also ask for extra licence information, so it is worth checking this before you leave the UK.

2. Take the correct vehicle documents

If you are taking your own vehicle abroad, carry your vehicle log book, also known as the V5C. If the vehicle is hired or leased, you may need a VE103 certificate to prove you are allowed to take it outside the UK.

For road legal number plate orders in the UK, document checks are also required before plates can be manufactured. You can view our full document guidance here: Documents Required.

3. Check your insurance and breakdown cover

UK vehicle insurance normally provides minimum third-party cover for driving in the EU, but that does not always mean you have the same level of cover that you have in the UK.

Before travelling, contact your insurer and check:

  • which countries are covered

  • whether your cover is comprehensive or third-party only abroad

  • whether your caravan or trailer is covered

  • whether you need extra documentation

  • whether European breakdown cover is included

A Green Card is not usually required for driving in the EU and several other European countries, but rules can vary outside those areas, so check with your insurer before you travel.

4. Make sure your number plate has the correct UK identifier

UK vehicles driven abroad must display the correct UK identifier. If your number plate already has the UK identifier with the Union flag, you usually do not need a separate UK sticker in many European countries.

You will need a UK sticker clearly displayed on the rear of your vehicle if your number plate has:

  • a GB identifier

  • a Euro symbol

  • an England, Scotland or Wales flag

  • numbers and letters only with no UK identifier

Important: if you are driving in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, you must display a UK sticker no matter what is shown on your number plate. You do not need a UK sticker or identifier to drive in Ireland.

5. Towing a caravan or trailer in Europe

If you are towing a caravan or trailer abroad, you may need to register the trailer before travelling.

UK trailers over 750kg must be registered to drive to or through most European countries, apart from Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain. Once registered, the trailer receives its own trailer registration number and must display a separate trailer registration plate.

This trailer plate is different from the towing vehicle’s number plate. It should be displayed on the rear of the trailer in a visible vertical position and fitted separately from the towing vehicle registration plate.

YNPS supplies a dedicated UK Trailer Registration Plate for Europe, made in the 9x7 style suitable for caravan and trailer travel.

6. What is a UK trailer registration plate?

A UK trailer registration plate is used to display the unique trailer registration number issued after the trailer is registered for international travel.

The plate is usually a white plate with black characters and the trailer number is displayed over two lines. It must be made to the correct trailer plate specification and should not include decorative patterns, backgrounds or styling that affects readability.

If your trailer has been registered for European travel, you can order your plate here:

7. Do trailers also need a UK sticker?

Some countries may require a UK sticker to be displayed on the trailer as well as the trailer registration plate. To avoid problems abroad, it is sensible to display a separate UK sticker near the trailer plate.

The UK sticker should not be printed onto the trailer registration plate itself. It should be displayed separately next to the plate.

8. Check your vehicle number plates before you travel

Before setting off, inspect your vehicle number plates carefully. Damaged, cracked, faded, dirty or incorrectly spaced plates can cause problems at home and abroad.

Check that your plates are:

  • clean and easy to read

  • securely fitted

  • correctly spaced

  • made in the legal character style

  • not cracked or faded

  • displaying the correct registration

  • suitable for UK road use

If your plates are worn or damaged, order a replacement before travelling. YNPS supplies 2D printed number plates, 3D gel number plates, 4D number plates, motorbike plates, square plates and trailer plates.

9. Country rules can vary

European driving rules are not the same in every country. Depending on where you travel, you may need extra equipment such as:

  • reflective jackets

  • warning triangle

  • headlight beam converters

  • emission zone permits or stickers

  • spare bulbs

  • breathalysers

  • snow chains or winter tyres in certain seasons or regions

Always check the rules for the countries you are visiting and the countries you will drive through. This is especially important for France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and alpine regions where local driving rules, tolls and environmental zones may apply.

10. Final checklist before driving to Europe

Before leaving the UK, check that you have:

  • valid UK driving licence

  • passport and travel documents

  • V5C log book or VE103 certificate

  • insurance certificate

  • breakdown cover details

  • UK sticker if required

  • clean and compliant vehicle number plates

  • registered trailer certificate if required

  • trailer registration plate if required

  • separate UK sticker for trailer if needed

  • country-specific safety equipment

  • emission zone permits where required

  • route, toll and ferry documents
